SUMMARY:Voices from the Inside
DESCRIPTION:An Arts in Corrections Poetry Reading \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event invites community members\, families\, advocates\, artists\, and anyone interested in restorative\, human-centered arts practices to gather and witness creative work produced inside the Mariposa Jail. Admission is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nTeaching artists Clay River and Andra Kovacs will read from the newly published chapbook created in this program. They will be joined by graduated participants reading their poetry\, as well as recordings of poetry written and read from inside of the jail. Chapbooks will be on sale at the event\, with all proceeds going towards art materials for the Mariposa Jail library. \n\n\n\nThe Arts Council has worked throughout this program to bring light to what is often dark\, and equalize spaces as creative classrooms. At this event\, the community will be invited to hear stories of how\, through poetry circles and drawing tables\, participants explored storytelling\, self-reflection\, and creative expression—often discovering that the page was the only place they could breathe.  \n\n\n\nThe pieces from this program reflect moments of vulnerability\, humor\, accountability\, and resilience. As the participants have shared: art doesn’t fix everything—but it gives us better moments and records. In the quiet grit of shading\, they found pieces of themselves. In a poem\, they could say: I am more than my worst moment. \n\n\n\nCome hear us. Come listen and see what happens when a pencil becomes a wand. Some days\, freedom looks shady.Connection is power—even from the other side of the wall. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please contact Andra at kovacs@mariposaartscouncil.org

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling (Trees)
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Arbor Day together by observing and documenting the beauty and science of the trees around us. In this workshop\, you’ll learn the basics of watercolor nature journaling: how to notice closely\, gather observations and curiosities\, and playfully capture them through paper and color. We’ll explore how to document details such as metadata\, questions\, diagrams\, and measurements\, and how to translate these observations into a phenology wheel\, a circular chart that tracks seasonal change\, including the life cycles of trees. The class will begin at tables with guided instruction\, followed by an optional tree walk and outdoor sketching session. During the walk\, you’ll experience music created from live trees using technology that translates plant biodata into sound\, offering a new way to connect with the living landscape. \n\n\n\nAll nature journaling workshops are for participants ages 18 and older. No previous art experience is required-beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome. Each class is limited to 12 participants\, so early registration is encouraged to reserve your space. If you’re unable to attend\, please cancel your reservation so others may join. All materials will be provided\, and you’ll leave with tools to continue your journaling practice. Please come ready to participate\, your presence helps shape the shared experience. Classes may be taken individually or as a series. Registration and waiver are available online. For accommodation requests\, please contact the Mariposa County Arts Council at least five days in advance.

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling (Color)
DESCRIPTION:Spring brings a burst of color\, creating a vibrant world all around us. The purple Lupine\, pink Western Redbud\, and orange Monarch butterfly are just the beginning of Mariposa’s unfolding color story. Join us for this watercolor workshop\, where you’ll learn how to transform three colors into a full spectrum of 36 through a color wheel. We’ll begin with guided instruction at tables\, then move into an optional color walk and outdoor painting session to observe and mix hues directly from the landscape. \n\n\n\nAll nature journaling workshops are for participants ages 18 and older. No previous art experience is required-beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome. Each class is limited to 12 participants\, so early registration is encouraged to reserve your space. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling (Accordion Journal Making)
DESCRIPTION:Mariposa is home to a rich diversity of flora\, fauna\, weather\, and geology\, shifting and evolving with each season. Join us in this workshop\, where you will begin by creating a watercolor palette inspired by the plants\, butterflies\, and wildlife of this place. You’ll then handcraft a zine-style nature journal to capture your observations over time. These seasonal journals will become the foundation for a year-long phenology wheel\, a circular\, illustrated chart that documents the changing seasons. Beginning with the inspiration of spring\, this workshop will introduce the tools and practices you can carry forward to complete your wheel throughout the year. \n\n\n\nAll nature journaling workshops are for participants ages 18 and older. No previous art experience is required-beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome. Each class is limited to 12 participants\, so early registration is encouraged to reserve your space.
